Embryo Donation
EMBRYO DONATION
Embryo donation refers to the process where individuals or couples donate their surplus embryos, created during in vitro fertilization (IVF), to others who wish to achieve pregnancy. This donation can be for procreative implantation or for research purposes, and it typically occurs after the donating family has completed their own family planning.
In the process of in-vitro fertilization, one family creates several embryos (egg fertilized with sperm), which are cryo-preserved for multiple attempts and/or siblings. When families complete, they often have remaining embryos in storage.
Who receives donated embryos?
Embryo donation makes it possible to have a child when one or both partners are not able to contribute their own sperm, eggs, or embryos. Using donated embryos may be considered by someone with untreatable infertility that involves both partners, untreatable infertility in a single parent, recurrent pregnancy loss thought to be related to the embryo, or genetic disorders affecting one or both partners
